Founder of the largest solid organ transplantation center in the world (with more than 500 liver transplantations annually), pioneer of deceased-donor organ donation in Iran, founder of the most active deceased-donor program in the Middle East and Asia, founder of Iranian Transplant Coordinator Network, founder of Avicenna University (with two large hospitals for transplantation and a large well-equipped dialysis center), and founder of several charity societies for cancer and kidney and liver diseases in southern Iran, Seyyed Ali Malek-Hosseini, MD, has been the mentor to more than 300 residents of general surgery and more than 40 transplant fellows. He has been an active member of the National Board of Examinees of general surgery for 25 years. Dr. Malek-Hosseini has a wealth of experience in treating war casualties, surgery of thyroid and parathyroid glands and the benign and malignant diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, especially gastric and esophageal cancers, and vascular surgery. He is a distinguished surgeon and a life member of the Iranian Academy of Medical Sciences. Professor Malek-Hosseini has also had substantial contribution to the scientific literature by publishing two books and more than 150 articles on various aspects of transplantation medicine published in peer-reviewed journals. He is also the Editor and Founder of the International Journal of Transplantation Medicine, a peer-reviewed quarterly and the official Journal of Iranian Society for Organ Transplantation and Avicenna Organ Transplant Institute.
