I am working as an associate professor at the Department of Internal Medicine at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. My research is centred on the immunobiology of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) and on the generation of kidney organoids from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS). Our team has studied MSC as mediators of immunomodulation and organ regeneration in a variety of in vitro and pre-clinical models, thereby focussing on the interaction of MSC with different immune cell types and on the localisation and survival of MSC after infusion. Currently we are trying to dissect key components of MSC that mediate their therapeutic effect, such as membrane-derived vesicles. Studies to iPS-derived kidney organoids are aimed at improving the maturation and functionality of organoids by modification of in vitro culture protocols and provide crucial signals by in vivo implantation of organoids. In vivo implantation models are furthermore aimed at examining survival, vascularisation, prevention of maldifferentiation and immunogenicity of the organoids.
